Emergency food planner

Set who you are feeding and for how long. The planner gives the calories and a rough shopping list, using typical values you can change to match the labels.

Work out your food

The NHS guide is around 2,000 kcal a day for women and 2,500 for men. Children vary a lot with age, so change the figures to fit your household.

    Rough shopping list

Pasta, rice and oats need water and heat to cook. Add that water to your water store.

Multiply each person's daily calories by the number of days: around 2,000 to 2,500 kcal for an adult and about 1,500 for a young child. Two adults for 3 days need roughly 13,500 kcal. Choose foods that need no fridge and little or no cooking.

      Questions people ask

How many calories do I need in an emergency food store?

Plan on about 2,000 to 2,500 kcal per adult per day and less for children. Multiply by the number of days you want to cover.

How many tins of beans equal a day's food?

A 400 g tin of baked beans is typically around 300 to 400 kcal, so one adult would need six or more tins a day from beans alone. A mix of foods is easier to live on.

What food should I store for a power cut?

Foods that keep without a fridge and need little or no cooking: tins, peanut butter, crackers, oats, dried fruit and nuts. The GOV.UK Be Ready checklist also suggests food that needs no fridge or cooking.

      Are the calorie figures exact?

No. They are typical values for common products. Check the label on what you buy and change the figures in the planner.
